Stewarton Young Musican Competition - 31 Mar 2009
Stewarton Academy's 2nd annual Young Musician of the Year competition was held this evening, 31 March, at the school and was, once again, a resounding success.
The 20 young musicians who entered the competition, without exception, performed to a very high standard and the task of the adjudicator, Ms. Fiona Scott, to select winners for each of the three classes must have been very difficult.
The audience were treated to first-class performances on a diverse range of instruments, including drums, guitar, piano and voice, as well as the range of wind instruments you might expect from a school boasting a gold award-winning wind ensemble.
The winner of the Junior Class (S1 and S2) was saxophonist, Eilidh MacQuarrie, and the runner-up, trombonist, Christopher Kilgour.
The Intermediate Class (S3 and S4) which had the highest number of competitors was won by pianist, Lauren Smith. Second place went to vocalist, Beth Morton and third to drummer, Gavin Wells.
The closely contested Senior Class (S5 and S6) was won by pianist, Matthew Allison and the runner-up was singer, Laura Burns.
The evening, organised by Mr. Greg McGuire, head of Music and Performing Arts, was compered by depute head, Ms. Denovan. The vote of thanks was given by head teacher, Ms. Sandra Leslie.
The next major event for Stewarton Academy music department will be the Senior Wind Ensemble's participation in the NCBF finals in Cardiff next month, followed in June by this year's school show, 'Grease'.
